Dubai
City Information
Dubai is one of the most developed and globally known emirates
in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). The other six emirates are
Abu Dhabi, Ajman, Fujairah, Ras al-Khaimah, Sharjah and Umm al-Quwain.
Officially, Dubai United Arab Emirates formed in 1971 but the
evidence shows its existence at least 150 years prior to the formation
of the UAE. Nowadays the Dubai city has great significance amongst
emirates as it has become main centre of legal, political, military
and economic functions. The main revenue resources of the city
are trade, manufacturing and financial services.
Archeologists suggest that the city was completely covered
with sand about 5,000 years ago. Prior to Islam; Bajir or Bajar
was worshipped here as the Byzantine and Sassanian empires were
in power. First time, the name Dubai was mentioned in the Book
Of Geography by the Spanish-Arab geographer Abu Abdullah al-Bakri
in the year 1095. Official documents say that Dubai was established
by the Al Abu Falasa clan (House of Al-Falasi) of Bani Yas clan
in the early 19th century. Initially, it was dependent of Abu
Dhabi until 1833. Pearl export was the prime commercial activity
of the city until the 1930s. First World War irreparably damaged
it and later on the Great Depression perfectly ruined it. The
modernity in form of electricity, telephone services and airport
facility were established here in the 1950s. Oil was discovered
in 1966 and then it led to a massive influx of foreign workers,
mainly Indians and Pakistanis.
Since 2002 the city has significantly grown its infrastructure
which has precisely left the impact upon global tourism. Dubai
Internet City, Dubai Media City and Dubai Maritime City are
some masterpiece of modern planning & architecture. The
Burj Dubai Tower is the world’s tallest free standing
hotels. The Palm Island, the World Islands and Burj Dubai may
be proved as some more milestones and identity of Dubai’s
skyline.
Rapid growing global attention and tourism in Dubai has raised
the importance of the city. Now, the Dubai international Airport
is on 17th rank amongst international airports. However, the
Dubai World Central International Airport in Jebel Ali is still
under construction. The city provides large bus transportation
services approximately on 69 routes. It is finely getting assistance
with extensive taxi services. Tram and Metro projects are under
construction.
